Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre

Incorporated in 2002, the doors to the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre (SLMHC) opened in 2010. This building visually and functionally integrates the rich history, traditions, and cultural backgrounds of the First Nations and non-native people of our area. The design opens in the four cardinal directions, welcoming all peoples and communities, and emphasizing the unifying relationship between both modern and traditional approaches to medicine.

Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre is a fully accredited 60-bed hospital and a 20-bed extended care facility, providing health services to approximately 30,000 people living in 31 First Nations communities and four other communities including Sioux Lookout, Hudson, Pickle Lake, and Savant Lake. Meno Ya Win, in the Anishinaabe language means health, wellness, and well-being, and SLMHC strives to embody that ideal of whole and holistic healing. The care at our health centre recognizes the relationship between the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of a person. Patients have the option to integrate traditional and modern medical practices.

SLMHC provides a broad range of basic and specialized services. These services include diabetes care, stroke prevention, mental health counselling and addiction services, and acute and outpatient programs. The Centre also has two OR suites, occupational therapy/physiotherapy support, dialysis, and a CT scanner.

The Jeremiah McKay Hostel

The Jeremiah McKay Hostel opened in February 2011. The vision of the hostel is to create a warm, welcoming, and secure residence for clients who require travel to Sioux Lookout to attend medical appointments. This is a 100-bed facility with food services, a family lounge, games area, and a play area for kids. It is conveniently attached to the Meno Ya Win Health Centre, allowing patients to safely and easily attend to medical needs, rest, and recuperate.

Northern Clinic

Our Northern Clinic is open Monday to Friday (excluding holidays) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There are many services available through the Northern Clinic including: glucometer, punch biopsies, diabetic filament, IUDs, and many other services. Many of our physicians who work at the Northern Clinic help serve our remote First Nations communities.

Hugh Allen Clinic

The Hugh Allen Clinic has a dedicated group of family physicians offering primary health care and access to support services in the community of Sioux Lookout and surrounding area. A complement of eleven family physicians and two registered practical nurses working together with an administrative support staff of five full time employees provides comprehensive health care. Our goal is to be patient focused and meet the needs of our patients as efficiently as possible.

Recreation Centre

The Sioux Lookout Recreation and Culture Department understands the importance of offering a wide range of programs and services that promote healthy and active living, as well as support relationships within families and the community.

We have a multipurpose facility that includes an arena, fitness center with a gymnasium, weight room, cardio room, indoor walking track, sauna, and squash courts to fill all your recreational needs. We have the Sioux Lookout Minor Hockey Association, Skating Club, Gymnastic Club, and the Sioux Lookout Hockey League that is supported by the efforts of many dedicated volunteers and neighbourhood associations.

The Sioux Lookout Regional Physician Services has purchased passes for use by our locums and our students. We will provide the Recreation Centre with a list of our staff visitors each month. If you want to use the Recreation Centre all you will need to do is sign in at the front desk and mention that you are with SLRPSI. The Recreation Centre is located at 85 King Street and they can be reached at 737-1994.

Annual festivals

The Sioux Lookout Blueberry Festival has been around for 38 years and is celebrated by residents and visitors to the town. This ten-day long festival features over 100 events, and it has become a summer celebration that attracts thousands of visitors from the region and across the world. Several of the events that take place feature the beauty of the area, allowing participants and spectators to enjoy the gorgeous lakes and beaches. There is something for everyone at the Sioux Lookout Blueberry Festival.

Ojibway Provincial Park

Ojibway Provincial Park is located approximately 20km outside of the town of Sioux Lookout on Little Vermillion Lake. The park offers a sandy beach ideal for swimming, water sport activities, boat launches, playground area, and approximately 11km of nature trails to explore. It is also a good spot to try your luck fishing for smallmouth bass.

The Sioux Lookout Public Library

The Sioux Lookout Public Library is a central spot for various events that happen in town. The library sponsors a local adult book club as well as a preschool story hour. Supporting a collection of more than 30,000 materials, the library often brings in popular Canadian authors for book readings. The Sioux Lookout Public Library is continuously changing and growing, thanks to the support of town council, a dedicated library board, the employees of the library, and all the patrons who visit it. Our library is an inviting place where all members can gather to learn, share stories, and discover more about their world.

The Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club

The Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club features a 9-hole golf course rated top 13 in Reader’s Digest’slist of “Canada’s Best Golf Courses for Under $100.”There are many tournaments sponsored by local businesses including the Men and Ladies Twilight Nights. One of the most popular golfing events held happens during Blueberry Festival, and is the Open Women’s and Men’s Golf Tournament.

Our Curling Club does have a curling league and is open to everyone. Tournaments happen throughout the curling season and include the Hope Classic Bonspiels for Breast Cancer.

Sacred Heart School

Sacred Heart School is part of the Northwest Catholic District School Board and serves kindergarten through to grade 8. Monthly masses are held for students and staff at Sacred Heart Church which is located just down the street from the school.

Sioux Mountain School

Sioux Mountain School is part of the Keewatin Patricia District School Board and goes from kindergarten through to grade 8. Students participate in monthly assemblies and attend various special events hosted by the school, including concerts and productions. Sioux Mountain is also unique in that it offers a Hockey Canada Skills Academy for all interested students in grades one to eight.

Sioux North High School

Newly built in March 2019, Sioux North High School runs from grade 9 through to grade 12. Serving approximately 500 students, Sioux North High School has 23 classrooms which include facilities for woodworking, automotive, food safety, music classes, and a cafetorium.
