Sioux Lookout is a great place to call home!

Nestled within a network of lakes, forests, and the rugged Canadian Shield, sits the beautiful Northwestern Ontario town of Sioux Lookout. Known as the Hub of the North, Sioux Lookout connects 31 remote northern communities (over 30,000 people) to healthcare, protective services, and other essentials such as education.

Sioux Lookout’s population is approximately 5,600 people over an area of 536 square kilometres, of which about a third is water. In Sioux Lookout we embrace community, diversity, and the beautiful outdoors. Our community is special because it forms deep connections between places and people, which we feel makes us truly the Hub of the North.

The people who live in Sioux Lookout and the surrounding area are diverse, vibrant, and progressive. Our region embraces new technologies, provides an abundance of natural resources, and focuses on the beneficial relationship between western medicine and more cultural and traditional medical practices. Our connections with neighbouring First Nations communities are strong, and we work together to consistently improve both our economy and quality of life for everyone.

Sioux Lookout has experienced significant growth, with money being invested into capital projects around the municipality. Several capital projects have been completed, including: the Meno Ya Win Health Centre, Heritage Railway Station Redevelopment, MNR Fire Management Centre, Airport Expansion, and a state-of-the-art Secondary School. We have experienced an increase in serviced residential, commercial, and industrial land.

Sioux Lookout is a year-round tourist destination. Visitors and residents take advantage of a wide variety of outdoor recreational and sporting opportunities including water sports, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and incredible fishing.

There are several Tribal Councils and First Nations agencies that are based in Sioux Lookout such as Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority (SLFNHA), Northern Nishnawbe Education Council (NNEC), and Tikinagan, among others. The Meno Ya Win Health Centre is a staple of our community and is a major employer serving 31 northern First Nations communities as well as 3 nearby municipalities.

Whether you are considering a visit to our region, or a permanent move, Sioux Lookout welcomes you to our charming and unique community.

This building visually and functionally integrates the rich history, traditions, and cultural backgrounds of the First Nations and non-native people of our area. The design opens in the four cardinal directions, welcoming all peoples and communities, and emphasizing the unifying relationship between both modern and traditional approaches to medicine.

Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre is a fully accredited 60-bed hospital and a 20-bed extended care facility, providing health services to approximately 30,000 people living in 31 First Nations communities and four other communities including Sioux Lookout, Hudson, Pickle Lake, and Savant Lake. Meno Ya Win, in the Anishinaabe language means health, wellness, and well-being, and SLMHC strives to embody that ideal of whole and holistic healing. The care at our health centre recognizes the relationship between the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of a person. Patients have the option to integrate traditional and modern medical practices.
