Sioux Lookout

The Sioux Lookout area has a population of approximately 5839 people and is the main hub for 31 remote First Nations communities north of Sioux Lookout. Many of the northern communities are only accessible by air, with populations ranging 32,000 people. Sioux Lookout is known as the “Hub of the North” as we are a lead provider of multiple services including healthcare.

Our beautiful, fully-accredited Meno Ya Win Health Centre has 60 beds, operating room theatres, occupational and physical therapy, dieticians, and diagnostic imaging services on site. The hospital employs general surgeons, anesthetists, and receives regular specialist support from Thunder Bay and Winnipeg. Our physicians provide consult services (when not in a community) via phone to experienced nurses stationed in each northern community’s medical center.

There are exciting and unique opportunities to practice rural family medicine in the Sioux Lookout region. You can travel and work in remote First Nations communities, enjoying the outdoors, the arts, community events, and much more while earning income.

Remuneration information

Family physicians who provide contract/locum coverage will be reimbursed on a per diem basis. A typical work week consists of a 45-hour schedule, plus the opportunity to provide various on-call services. All remuneration is based on a pre-set fee schedule. Locums also qualify for HFO’s Rural Family Medicine Locum program (RFMLP).
