Sioux Lookout and Area Background

Sioux Lookout has a population of approximately 5500 people and is the main hub for the 31 remote First Nation Communities north of Sioux Lookout. The majority of the communities are only accessible by air with populations ranging from 200 to 2500 with an overall catchment area of 32,000.

Sioux Lookout known as the “Hub of the North” is the lead provider of multiple services including health care. Located 70 km north of the Trans-Canada Highway between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg with a busy local airport flying to the First Nation communities, Thunder Bay, and Winnipeg on a daily basis.

Sioux Lookout recently opened a fully accredited 60 bed hospital called the Meno-Ya Win Health Centre. Meno-Ya Win has two OR suites, OT, PT, dieticians, diagnostic imaging, and mental health services on site. The hospital employs two general surgeons, a full-time radiologist, and regularly receives specialist support from Thunder Bay and Winnipeg. A 100 bed hostel is directly attached to the hospital which creates easy access to services for visiting First Nation patients.

Physicians consult with experienced nurses stationed in each community’s medical centre via phone from the hospital. Doctors also travel to communities to regularly hold clinics.

To ensure our patients get the continuity of care they deserve we are looking for physicians who are willing to commit to Sioux Lookout and Area on a full-time or part-time basis. Contracts are signed each fiscal year (April 1st – March 31st) and layout the expectations and responsibilities of the physician and SLRPSI.

We do accept locums to supplement the work of our contracted physicians. To apply for a locum opportunity we require that you submit an up to date CV and a Cover Letter explaining why you would be a good long-term fit for Sioux Lookout and Area.

Our Medical Director reviews your application and once it is approved we begin the privileging process . Keep in mind that you are required to be available to work in ER, as a Hospitalist, in the clinic, provide community phone coverage, and travel to and work in remote First Nations communities while you are here.

During your first locum with Sioux lookout we expect that you can commit a minimum of three weeks.

SLRPSI compensates physicians on a per diem basis. Please contact us for more details.

We definitely appreciate your interest and if you know anyone else that would be interested in working in the area please forward their contact info.
